Curb Appeal: What’s all of the fuss about?
While it’s not necessarily fair, just as a book is judged by its cover, both you and your home are judged by its curb appeal.
That’s because the exterior of your home says a lot about you. If it looks good and well maintained your neighbors will think you’re a rock star. If not, they’ll think you’re desperately auditioning for one of those home improvement reality TV makeover shows.
Here are six curb appeal projects that will give you the biggest bang for your buck:
- Paint your home’s exterior – Use friendly, warm and welcoming colors to instantly make your home look much more inviting. Choose a color palette that will set your home apart in the neighborhood and give it a unique presence and character. One of the benefits of a new paint job is that paint protects your home from the elements like sun, rain and ice as well as insects and mildew that can invade your home and cause damage that goes undetected until it’s too late.
- Paint the front door – If you’ve got limited funds and/or time, just paint the front door with a bold color that complements the exterior colors and the overall style of your home. Whenever you’re painting in preparation for putting your home on the market, be careful not to choose a color that’s so bold it actually turns buyers off (remember when avocado green was the all the rage in the 70s?).
- Install a new, front-facing garage door – This project delivers instant gratification because it can typically be done in one day.
- Install new exterior light fixtures – This quick and affordable project can also be done in a day to enhance the appearance of your home.
- Install large address numbers – There’s nothing more frustrating than looking for an address when you’re slowly driving by and unable to read the address on the house. So, do your guests a favor and choose address numbers in a size they can easily actually see from the curb. Then, choose a finish that complements your color palette and fixtures.
- Re-landscape front yard – Good landscape design is so much more than having a nice looking lawn. It’s about creating a canvas of hardscape (i.e. paths or walls) and vegetation that take your climate, soil type, irrigation, etc. into consideration.
It’s easy to see how these curb appeal projects make the most of your home’s appearance. So, which project are you going to start with?
