Should You DIY?

Is DIY worth the savings?

The construction industry estimates that at least 30% of a contractor’s business comes from Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects gone awry.

Why?

Because homeowners get in over their heads. They over-confidently think they can get their DIY project done quickly with the same quality as a skilled contractor because “they made it look so easy on TV”.

Don’t get me wrong, it is possible to save money when embarking on some aspect of your remodel as a DIY project — if you choose the right projects. However, when I ask my clients to honestly evaluate whether or not they have the necessary skills and expertise to do a great job quickly, they often realize it’s better left to the pros.

So, before you take on your next DIY, consider these four important factors…

Your motivation beyond cost

Don’t be seduced by the low DIY price tag. There are other ways you can reduce the cost of your home improvement project — without having to turn to DIY.

The real cost of DIY

While you may be eliminating paying a pro to do the job, your time is also valuable. That still translates into money. Think about the amount of your time (not the contractor’s) that would be required to complete the project. Then think about whether you’re willing to put in that time to live amongst an unfinished project and complete it for an extended period. Also, do you have the right tools?  If not, consider whether it makes sense to invest in tools for one project.

The potential for a project turning into a money pit.

Do you really have the skills and experience to the job right the first time? Can your wallet handle calling in the contractor to fix the damage you’ve done?I

Insurance Considerations

A very important aspect of DIY that people often forget is whether an insurance claim would be paid as a result of a hazard caused by your negligence or lack of skills or experience.

So, while it looks quick and easy on Pinterest or on your favorite home remodeling show, Do-It-Yourself doesn’t always translate to saved money or great work. Really weigh your options first, and you’ll save money in the long run.

Indeed, a DIY project has pros and cons. In my opinion, it really depends on your situation and your project since we can’t just do something which we don’t have the knowledge about.

Agree that the decision to DIY or not depends on your situation. If you’ve got the knowledge, skills and experience to get a professional result in a timely manner, go for it!
